The Six Rules of The KonMari Method

2. Visualize your ideal lifestyle as you work
Kondo suggests visualizing the kind of lifestyle you want to live. This step helps you clarify why you are tidying up your home in the first place and identify what things do not match with your vision of an ideal life. 3. Finish clearing up items first
The third rule of the KonMari method is to focus on discarding items first. During this step, focus on what you want to keep and still holds value to you. This step will teach you how each item affects your life and impacts your decisions on how to acquire new things in the future.
4. Tidy by category, not by location
More often, similar items are stored in multiple locations around the house. To maximize efficiency and avoid repeating the same steps for each room, clear up things by category—separate them by categories like clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous items, and sentimental ones.
5. Stick to the proper order
Kondo states that the order of how you tidy your things is essential to getting things done quicker and more efficiently. By starting with the easiest category (clothes) and ending with the most difficult (sentimental items), you hone your decision-making skills in the process.

For this final rule, Kondo encourages you to pick up each item individually and ask yourself if it sparks joy in you. Pay close attention to how your body responds to this. By doing so, you select the items that you need the most and make you happy.
