Moving is an exciting period. You are already planning your new room layout, the colour, picturing what goes where and other fun activities. Completely normal, but only one tiny item remains, and that’s the actual moving event. Relocating all of your stuff from point A to point B does not have to be stress-inducing, as with proper planning, you can turn it into a breeze. There is no time like today, so let’s get started.
1. Packing supplies
The craftsman is only as good as his tools. Stuffing all that you have into cardboard boxes and hoping for the best is a thing of the past. Bubble wrap, wrapping paper, cardboard separators, and quality duct tape, make all the difference in the world. Bubble wrap protects your more fragile essentials, wrapping paper makes sure nothing gets dented, and cardboard separators are ideal for glass and glass-like items. Duct tape has a million uses, and its million and first usage is to make sure your boxes are sealed tight.
You want them opened only when you are at your new place, and not before. Investments that you make in this department ensure that you suffer no or fewer damages to your possessions during the actual move. Pennies you think are saved become necessary investments when you need to cover the damages, should you choose to reduce or cheapen essential supplies.
2. De-cluttering
A cleanroom is a sign of a clear mind. You can view moving as comprehensive inventory management. Plenty of people don’t even know what they exactly own, so moving is a great way to get a grip on your possessions. Being realistic will help you declutter your surroundings from those long-ago abandoned items. If you forgot you, have it chances are high that you don’t need it. Letting go or even recycling does wonders for your moving event. Fewer items to move means money saved. If you take the recycling, like, for example, your old, forgotten, and obsolete electronics, you can even earn a pretty penny or two. Hoarding is not something that voluntarily happens, but gradually and over time. Until you start packing all of your items, you probably don’t even know what you own. Perfectly understandable and you can treat the whole moving process as a chance to start anew. New place, new you, new inventory.
3. Hire pros
So, you are putting it all on paper. You need material, boxes, have to invite some friend over, get pizza and beer, hire a van or a moving truck, make two or more trips, get two days off from work, at least… the list goes on and on, and you are starting to get a headache. Expenses relentlessly pile up, and there’s no end in sight for them. Luckily for you, there is always a plan B, which is reliable and quick moving services. Look at it from this angle.
When you need your house painted, do you do it yourself? Or do you hire someone? The same logic applies to bakers, hairstylists, clothes manufacturers and so on. Moving services have ample experience under their belt, know all the regulations and have the tool of the trade. They have done this a million times, and your move will be a million and one. It’s not an expense, but an investment in your stress relief and free time.
4. Proper stacking
So, everything is boxed up and ready to go. There are brown boxes everywhere, and you want to make sense of them. Bigger, sturdier boxes with heavier items go at the bottom. You will want to avoid putting boxes with glass and fragile items anywhere higher than the ground floor. Label them properly or colour code them so that you know which they are and set them aside. Larger items can usually be dismantled and put inside a single box for easier transport. When you are loading the van, what you put in first, goes out last, so remember that. And last but not least we have the quality of boxes themselves.
5. Box inspection
Don’t cheap out at the core of moving. Using your common sense, you can decipher which boxes are not fit for moving. Think of it this way. If you cheapen on getting quality boxes you save pennies. When a lousy box falls apart, and your plates recreate a Greek wedding, you will be paying in the thousands. Any convenience store or the larger chain has mountains of boxes generated daily. Talking to employees, asking nicely or offering to buy them is how you get your hands on some quality boxes, ripe for your moving show.
Embarking on any new adventure seems daunting at first. Step by step, bit by bit, and your moving process will be done in no time. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
